May is National Bicycle Month!

May is National Bicycle Month!

May is officially National Bicycle Month, and here in Sonoma County, there’s no better time to get outside and enjoy life on two wheels. Whether you’re commuting to work, cruising through wine country, riding with your kids, or finally dusting off the bike in the garage, National Bicycle Month is all about celebrating the joy, freedom, and practicality of biking.

At Barber Insurance Agency, we love seeing our community embrace healthy, sustainable ways to get around — and May is packed with opportunities to join the fun.

Local Bike Month Events We’re Excited About

Sonoma County Bike to Work Day

Hosted by the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition, Bike to Work Day encourages locals to swap four wheels for two — even just for the morning commute. Energizer Stations pop up throughout Sonoma County offering coffee, snacks, swag, and encouragement for riders.

Pedal Fest at SOMO Village

One of the biggest local celebrations of Bike Month, Pedal Fest brings together community rides, bike demos, vendors, races, family activities, and general bike-loving fun at SOMO Village in Rohnert Park. Kids can decorate bikes, families can join group rides, and riders of all ages are welcome.

Bay Area Bike to Wherever Days

Throughout May, communities across the Bay Area celebrate “Bike to Wherever Days,” encouraging people to ride for errands, recreation, school, work, or just for fun. It’s a great reminder that biking doesn’t have to be extreme to make a positive impact.

Why We Love Bicycle Month

Biking is more than just exercise. It helps reduce traffic, supports cleaner air, builds community, and lets you experience Sonoma County at a slower pace. From neighborhood rides to scenic backroads, cycling is one of the best ways to enjoy where we live.

And from an insurance perspective, it’s also a good reminder to review safety basics before heading out:

  • Always wear a properly fitted helmet
  • Use lights and reflectors if riding near dusk or nighttime
  • Follow traffic laws and stay visible to drivers
  • Check your brakes and tire pressure before longer rides
  • Consider coverage options for expensive bikes or e-bikes

Thinking About an E-Bike?

E-bikes continue to grow in popularity across Sonoma County, especially for commuting and running errands. Depending on the type and value of your bike, you may want to talk with your insurance agent about whether your homeowners or renters policy provides adequate protection.

Our team is always happy to help answer questions about coverage, liability, and protecting the things that keep your family moving.

Here’s to a fun, safe, and active National Bicycle Month. We’ll see you out on the trails and bike lanes, Sonoma County!
