The Fourth of July is one of our favorite summer traditions. A chance to gather with friends and family, enjoy backyard barbecues, and celebrate our community. As we head into the holiday weekend, it's also an important time to remember that fireworks come with serious risks, especially here in Sonoma County.
Fireworks are illegal throughout most of the North Bay
Many people don't realize that all fireworks are illegal throughout Sonoma and Napa counties, with the exception of "Safe and Sane" fireworks within Cloverdale city limits.
Local fire and law enforcement agencies are urging residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals by attending one of the many community celebrations happening across the North Bay. Professional displays are not only spectacular, they're significantly safer for everyone involved.
Wildfire season is already here
Living in Northern California means we know how quickly a single spark can change everything.
Dry grasses, warm temperatures, and summer winds create ideal conditions for fires to spread rapidly. Even small fireworks like sparklers can reach temperatures of nearly 2,000°F...hot enough to ignite dry vegetation, mulch, fencing, or nearby landscaping!
Every year, fireworks are responsible for:
- Residential fires
- Grass and vegetation fires
- Serious burns and injuries
- Property damage
- Emergency calls that stretch our local first responders
Protecting our homes and neighborhoods starts with making smart choices before the first fuse is ever lit.
Remember our four-legged family members
At Barber Insurance Agency, we're animal lovers, and we know the Fourth of July can be one of the most stressful days of the year for pets.
The loud booms, flashing lights, and unfamiliar activity can pets incredible distress. Every year, animal shelters report an increase in lost pets during the holiday weekend.
A few simple steps can help keep them safe:
- Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin.
- Create a quiet, comfortable room with familiar blankets or toys.
- Turn on a television, fan, or calming music to help mask outside noises.
- Make sure collars and ID tags are current and microchip information is up to date.
- If your pet experiences significant anxiety, talk with your veterinarian before the holiday about calming strategies.
A little preparation can make a big difference for your furry family members.
Celebrate safely this year
Instead of lighting fireworks at home, consider supporting one of the many professional fireworks or drone shows taking place throughout Sonoma and Napa counties. They're designed to provide a memorable celebration while reducing the risk of injuries and wildfires in our communities.
At Barber Insurance Agency, protecting what matters most is what we do every day. Whether it's helping you insure your home, preparing for wildfire season, or sharing simple safety reminders like these, we're proud to serve our North Bay Area neighbors.
We hope you have a safe, fun, and memorable Independence Day. Happy Fourth of July!
