Driving Safe on Slick Roads: Tips for the First (and Second, and Third) Rains

Here in Sonoma County, the first big rain after months of dry weather always feels refreshing—until you hit the road. Those first few storms of the season can be some of the most dangerous driving days of the year. At Barber Insurance, we want to help keep you safe as we head into the rainier season.

Why the First Rains Are So Risky

When rain finally arrives after a long dry spell, it mixes with built-up oil, dust, and debris on the pavement. The result? Roads that are extra slick and slippery, especially during the first few hours of rainfall. Even after the initial storm passes, the next few rains can keep roads unpredictable as oils continue to rise to the surface.

Safe Driving Tips for Wet Weather

  • Slow down. Reduced traction means it takes longer to stop—so give yourself extra space and time.

  • Check your tires. Worn tread or low air pressure can make slick conditions even more dangerous.

  • Replace worn wipers. Good visibility is critical during heavy rain and spray from other vehicles.

  • Avoid sudden moves. Brake gently, steer smoothly, and accelerate slowly to reduce the chance of skidding.

  • Watch for standing water. Hydroplaning can happen at speeds as low as 35 mph. If it happens, ease off the gas and steer straight—don’t slam the brakes.

  • Leave extra following distance. A good rule is to double the space you’d normally keep between your car and the one in front of you.

A Seasonal Reminder

Autumn in Sonoma County is beautiful—but it’s also the start of our wetter months. Whether it’s the first drizzle or the third storm, keeping these habits in mind can help protect you, your passengers, and everyone else on the road.

And don’t forget: safe driving habits are just one piece of the puzzle. The right auto insurance coverage makes sure you’re protected when the unexpected happens. If you’re not sure your policy is up to date, or you’d like to review your coverage, the team at Barber Insurance is here to help.
