FAQ: Does Insurance Cover the Driver or the Car?

Hello 2021! Today we have one of our favorite FAQ back on the docket. Here's the interaction;

Question:

Hi Barber Insurance Agent,
I am going on a road trip with my daughter in her car soon. Am I covered by my policy if I take a shift or two of driving? Or would her policy cover me? Or am I stuck as a passenger the whole way?
I appreciate any input you have.

Answer:

Hi Barber Insurance Customer,

The general rule of thumb is that the insurance follows the car, not the driver. So it's a question of how her policy handles permissive drivers. She has insurance through a different provider, so you'll need to look into this yourself. Her policy could be limited only to listed drivers (not common) OR you could be specifically excluded on her policy, so have her check with them.

A driver's policy might cover the driver's liability in an accident as a secondary option if driving a vehicle that had no insurance and if the driver is liable, but it depends upon a lot of variables and isn't the intention or a given. Clear as mud? Call me if you have any further questions. Thanks!

Clear as mud! Always, always, always check with your agent about who is included (or specifically excluded) from your policy. Interested in adding someone to your policy? Give us a call Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
