Atmospheric River Checklist, Before & After

Atmospheric River Checklist, Before & After

Phew, what a wild week it's been! We hope all is well with you. In the wake of the recent atmospheric rivers, we thought it was due time to do a post-storm checklist blog.

If you did experience damage, we recommend you do the following:

  • Document the damage - When it's safe to do so, capture photographs and videos detailing the damage to your property. Even if you're unsure whether the recent storms caused the damage, document everything.
  • Keep receipts - Retain any receipts for expenses related to the flood.
  • Make temporary repairs - Implement temporary repairs to prevent further damage to your property. However, refrain from making permanent repairs until the claims process has begun and your insurance adjuster has inspected the damage.
  • Reach out to us - There are specific circumstances in which filing a claim may not be the best course of action (such as if the damage was limited and will not cause you to hit your deductible). With that in mind, I am happy to walk you through what your policy stipulates as well as your best options.

As the winter carries on, we also want to share a quick list of how to be prepared for future weather events like the one we just experienced.

  • Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on flood alerts and warnings through local news sources and weather apps, like weather.gov. It's crucial to be aware of changing conditions and evacuation orders if they are issued.
  • Sandbag Your Property: If your area is susceptible to flooding, consider placing sandbags around your property to divert water away from your home. Local authorities or emergency services may provide guidance on how to use sandbags effectively.
  • Turn Off Utilities: In the event of a flood, turn off gas, electricity, and water supplies to prevent further damage and hazards. Familiarize yourself with how to safely shut off these utilities.
  • Assist Vulnerable Neighbors if Possible: Keep an eye out for neighbors who may need assistance, particularly the elderly, disabled, or those with young children.

Please stay safe, and reach out anytime. The Barber Insurance team is here to help however we can.
