8 Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is a joyous time when we get to celebrate with our loved ones and enjoy a bountiful meal together. However, as with any gathering, the holiday presents us with a few possible hazards, so it’s good to think ahead and make sure the day goes off without a hitch! Here are a few tips:

  1. Check with your guests about food allergies ahead of time to avoid any unpleasant surprises and to make sure everyone has something to enjoy.

  2. Make sure the kitchen is attended at all times by an adult to avoid the danger of kitchen fires.

  3. Keep the kitchen floor clear of any spilled liquids or food debris to avoid creating a slipping hazard.

  4. Keep pets clear of the kitchen to make sure they don’t gobble up anything unsafe from the floor, and to avoid tripping over them.

  5. If you have animals, warn your guests to avoid giving them too many scraps or scraps that may be unsafe to them such as: anything with bones, anything undercooked, too much sage or other herbs, onions and garlic, chocolate, alcohol, mushrooms, or uncooked doughs. Although a taste or two of something safe won’t hurt, make sure your animals don’t overdo it with rich, fatty foods!

  6. Make sure sharp knives are kept out of reach of children.

  7. Use a thermometer to check the turkey temperature — it should reach a minimal internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

  8. Make sure your homeowners policy is up to date to avoid any problems with liability. If you’re not properly insured, something as simple as someone tripping and injuring themselves can become a huge problem for you.
